Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs Nachman Shai: Discussing Antisemitism and Palestinian Issues
Wednesday, February 23 at 9 a.m.
We are honored to host Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs Dr. Nachman Shai. During his wide-ranging distinguished career, he has served as minister in the Knesset twice and as IDF spokesman, with the rank of brigadier general. Consistent with his commitment to fortify the ties between the Jewish State and the Jewish people, he recently founded and served as chair of the “Caucus to strengthen the Jewish People.” Last year, he was a visiting Professor at Duke. He has published three books on the intersection of diplomacy, media, and security.
When asked about his role as the communicator to the population of Israel during the Iraq war that led to his being labeled “The Great Calmer,” he said, “I spoke quietly and told the truth.”
Now that he has assumed responsibility, he has indicated that the ministry will no longer simply ask what the diaspora can do for Israel, but also what Israel can do for the diaspora. At the same time, he indicated that he sees the need to help advance the Palestinian issue to engage with young US Jews. Those fresh ideas will guide our interview.
