Shir HaShirim, also called the “Song of Songs” or “The Song of Solomon,” is read on Pesach due to its beautiful passages of the spring: “Look, the winter has passed, the rain is over and gone, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in the land.” And yet the pre-High Holidays period of Elul ( ( אלול is an acrostic for the words from Shir HaShirim: Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li, “I am My Beloved’s and My Beloved is Mine.” The text contains rich, sensual images of a relationship between two lovers, a symbol of Israel’s relationship with G-d—a loving, intimate view of a faithful marriage. In this interdisciplinary Elul session, we will look at the powerful images of love presented in the words of Shir HaShirim, accompanied by artists’ interpretive paintings, woodblocks, and other media. There will be room for discussion of the literal and symbolic meanings of the text as we share this multifaceted text.
