Alamance County Teen Sets the Stage to Share the Story of Children of the Holocaust

Over 15,000 children passed through the gates of Terezin, a concentration camp 60 miles north of Prague. Fewer than 100 survived. I Never Saw Another Butterfly tells the story of the children who perished and those who survived.

Award winning Studio 1 Theatre in Burlington, North Carolina brings this powerful and timely play to the stage January 16th – 19th, 2025.

It has been the mission of 17-year-old Gracie Cohen, a member of Temple Emanuel and former student of B’nai Shalom Day School, to tell the story of the children of the Holocaust, especially in her Alamance County community where there are very few Jewish families.

“Ever since I played the role of Raya Englanderova at Temple Emanuel when I was 12 years old, I wanted to bring this tragic yet hopeful story to a larger audience. It’s important to me, especially during this time of increased antisemitism, that everyone knows our history, so it won’t be repeated.”

From behind the barbed wire fences, teachers and students at Terezin showed defiance by learning when it was forbidden, by drawing pictures of life as well as of death, and by writing poems. We see the world through their eyes, one of lose and laughter, fear and flowers, brutality and butterflies.
